Fluiten was awarded the contract to supply 240 mechanical seals installed on 120 boiler feed water pumps double frame. Fluiten will also supply 240 heat exchanger and 480 magnetic separator. The order will be processed in three batches by March 2013. To allow the manufacturer, our client, to get the contract to supply the 120 boiler feed water pumps, we cooperated since the offering to optimize the project in every aspect, from the concept to supplying materials into an optical of cost containment while maintaining the highest quality standards that has always characterized us.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROJECT:
• The boiler feed water pumps are the centre of an electricity production plant and they have the function to send the hot water to the boiler so the water become steam can feed the turbines that produce electricity. The failure of a feed pump could cause the stop of a plant line with huge costs connected to the lack of production.
• The hot water above 80°C drops its viscosity and lubricating ability needed for the proper functioning of the mechanical seal, this is the reason to choose, also for standard references, a seal with plan 23 (see annex) that has required certain precautions:
- the calibration of the pumping ring must be calculated to allow the circulation of a correct quantity of liquid such as to remove the heat generated by the sealing surfaces;
- the calibration of the heat exchanger must ensure an heat exchange in according to operating conditions;
- o-ring’s material must be chosen to maintain its own elastic properties considering the changes of the temperature and pressure conditions of the process water;
- the mechanical seal must also prevent evaporation of the transient liquid film between the faces to avoid undesired increases in torque, power consumption and damages to sliding surfaces.
 
In the calibration should be considered the parameter defined “heat soak”: the amount of the heating coming from the machine and the process liquid which must also be disposed.
 
SOLUTION:
The Fluiten solution proposed for this application was developed by modifying the standard mechanical seal BM3A providing the following measures:
• the flange and the shaft sleeve can be mounted as a cartridge mechanical seal;
• the pumping ring is incorporated into the seal body;
• a labyrinth system also placed on the rotating part of the seal, separates the stuffing box in which circulates the fluid to the process temperature, from the seal faces in which the water circulates cooled coming from the heat exchanger;
• the seals’ surfaces of high-grade graphite against the silicon carbide are most suitable to dissipate the heat generated; the "FLUIGRID" technology developed by Fluiten for this type of application further reduces friction and facilitates a stable liquid film between the faces.
